Frequently asked questions about covert surveillance services

Since

1992

Why is covert surveillance useful?

Covert surveillance is deployed to obtain the evidence and intelligence that cannot be obtained using less intrusive means. This tactic can uncover evidence that online tools cannot and can corroborate other intelligence streams. The evidence obtained can be irrefutable. As the saying goes ‘a picture paints a thousand words’. Our Government trained operators are experienced at getting the best evidence to support your investigation.

Is covert surveillance legal UK?

In short the answer is yes but with many provisos. It has to be proportionate to the aims it seeks to achieve; it must be undertaken with due consideration to privacy laws, as well as harassment, stalking, trespass and criminal damage legislation. Our deployments are always entirely lawful and we provide advice around this.

Who can authorise covert surveillance?

Private investigators in the UK are currently unlicensed and are not considered ‘Public Bodies’ for the purpose of authorisation. However, at Soteria, all our deployments are independently assessed and authorised by an experienced Authorising Officer based on the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.

What does a covert surveillance deployment look like?

A minimum of two persons up to a team of 8 people, depending on the risk and requirements of the task, will be deployed. They will covertly monitor, record and evidence all activity undertaken by the subject(s) of the operation. The operatives will use cars, motorbikes, public transport and airlines to maintain control and can deploy to static locations including rural areas. A full report is provided to the client at the conclusion of the operation.

Can I use the evidence gathered from covert surveillance in a court?

We cannot reply for other service providers but all of our product obtained can be used in a court of law. Our legally and ethically compliant service ensures the best evidence and intelligence is obtained.

How much does covert surveillance cost?

Cost is dependant on how many operatives are required to safely and comprehensively achieve the aims of the deployment. The average cost for surveillance in the UK in 2024, per operative, ranges from £35 to £150 per hour. Our start point is £65 per operative per hour. Additional costs that need to be considered are mileage incurred and other deployment costs like parking, travel, covert expenses (e.g.; meal in a restaurant if subject meets someone in a restaurant). At Soteria we discuss all costing prior to any deployment and look for the most cost-effective solution.

Are Soteria registered with a professional body?

We are members of the Association of British Investigators, the Gold Standard for private investigators. We are also members of the Association of Corporate Investigators and the International Association of Behaviour Detection & Analysis. We are fully insured with Hiscox, as specialist insurer and are registered with Companies House and the Information Commissioners Office.

Where can you deploy to?

Anywhere, as long as it is legal to do so. We have operated across the UK and Europe but can, with due consideration, deploy  to any location to achieve your aims.
